As a big dumb movie this is fairly entertaining. But if you can't turn off your brain this is crap.
Historically, it is crap. They just throw all sorts of things in with no regard as to when they happened or when they existed. Woolly Mammoths, Saber Tooth Tigers, giant carnivorous flightless birds, pyramids. They got it all in there. There's even an old woman that they call the last of her time which might be meant to indicate that she is a Neanderthal. They cover up the fact that that the pyramids weren't around then by hinting at the theory that the pyramids and the sphinx was made by some civilization that predated the Egyptians.
For someone who is interested in crazy theories and enjoys reading the crazy Chariots of the Gods stuff these ideas were interesting and it would be fun to have a movie where those ideas were central to the story. In this movie though they are just justifications for set pieces. There's nothing inherently wrong with that and, again, if you can turn off your brain it is a fun ride.
Even more troubling than the historical stuff is the fact that what we have here is yet another movie where the white guy is leading a bunch of non-white people and rescuing the woman. It would have been a lot more interesting to have the cast been all African. Sadly, it would have been box office poison. Still, when's the last time Hollywood even took the chance? The film does the best it can not to have the darker skinned people just fall in line behind whitey and in some ways our great white hope is just the guy who is in the right place at the right time for all these people to revolt against the bad guys. They also have the woman try to fight back by stabbing a few people. However, she's mainly silent and eye candy. The bad guys allegedly kidnapped people to use as slave labor. Wouldn't it have been more realistic to have our hero be the one kidnapped and the woman be the one to lead the rescue? I mean they can have the pyramids built using mammoths and pulley's but we can't have a kick ass cavewoman?
